do follow the “d list”
I’ve been using a plugin called Do Follow on my blogs for months. You may not know that when you leave a comment on a WordPress blog, a “no follow” tag is automatically inserted so that the link is NOT spidered by search engines. I know a lot of people out there love to leave comments in hopes of increasing backlinks, but you’re spinning your wheels if you’re doing it on blogs that aren’t using Do Follow yet.
When you add a Do Follow plugin (there are few different ones to choose from!) to your site, it strips the nofollow attribute from your comments, so you’re giving link love to each person who comments on your site. Since I moderate my comments and don’t allow dirty spammers to get through, this is a neat way to thank people for commenting on your blog, by giving them some extra exposure for their links.
To make it easier for all of YOU to find blogs that are using Do Follow, I’m officially starting the “D List“. Not only can you visit the blogs on this list, leave a comment, and get a REAL link back to your site (because they’re all using Do Follow), you’ll increase links to your blog by adding your blog to the D list. I believe Michael Scott would call that “Win - Win - Win”.
(Note: Any blog using any Do Follow is welcome - not just the one I linked above!)

1. Write a short paragraph at the beginning of your post and link back to the blog that put you on the list in the paragraph. This isn’t a suggestion. You need to break up the duplicate content. Someone took the time to add you so the least you can do is give them an extra link back.
2. Copy the list of originals below COMPLETELY and add it to your blog. If you would like a different keyword for your blog then change it when you do your post and it should pass to most blogs with that keyword.
3. Take the adds from the blog that added you and place them in the “Originals” list.
4. Add at least 1 new blog that you KNOW is using the DO FOLLOW plugin to the list in the “My Adds” section. (Add no more than 5!) Let the people you’ve added know, so that they can keep the list going! (Link all the blogs in your post too!)
5. Leave relevant comments on the blogs listed and get a link back to your site thanks to Do Follow!

I’m on it
http://www.utterlygeek.com/2007/04/12/taking-the-i-follow-movement-forward/
[…] And just today Colleen wrote about the DoFollow plugin that allows search engines to spider comments. I love when people comment on my blog so naturally, I want everyone to have an incentive to leave me wonderful messages. That’s why I use the DoFollow plugin and you should, too. […]
Okay, I’m utterly confused. I need to read that again! *reads again* Hmm. So this is like one of those e-mails where you’re supposed to add your name to the bottom, right? I want to make sure I understand before I try to play, or I could be in trouble, LOL!
Done! Thx
[…] Julie from UtterlyGeek.com, has continued on where Colleen left off, and has posted her version of the the D List. The D-List is a version of the I Follow Movement. What we’re trying to do, is build a complete list of all the blogs tht use the dofollow plugin. […]
[…] Seems like the i-Follow Movement is getting loads more support than I expected. Colleen over at GeekySpeaky.com is taking the I Follow Movement one step further. She has started the D List. Its a complete list of all the blogs that use the dofollow plugin, and you can gain some great traffic, by joining the list, and commenting on these blogs. I’ve just got tagged by Jules, so I have to take this forward or I’ll be cursed forever and mushrooms will grow on my head! […]
Glad you found a use for my I Follow logo Colleen. If anyone else wants one, I did them in multiple colors: http://randaclay.com/blog/i-follow/
I’m in! Let’s see if I can follow the instructions correctly.
[…] Colleen over at GeekySpeaky.com is taking the I Follow Movement one step further. She has started the D List, and Jenn from Foot Prints On The Moon added me. It’s a complete list of all the blogs that use the dofollow plugin, and you can gain some great traffic, by joining the list, and commenting on these blogs. […]
[…] I was considering researching and writing a list of blogs that use the “do follow” tag which allows link credit in blog posts. I think this is a fantastic idea, and it it is something I will be implementing in the Naked SEO Blog 2.0. […]
I hadn’t heard of this until today, but I’ll be giving it some serious consideration. Just a few weeks ago I learned that blogger comments do the same thing & now wordpress too! I feel so betrayed. I’ll just have to become extra vigilant about getting rid of spam comments so I don’t end up linking to icky sites, I believe that is the technical term for them, icky.
[…] Did you know that when you leave a comment on a WordPress blog, a “no follow” tag is automatically inserted into the comment? The “no follow” tag tells search engines not to bother following that link. Everyone who blogs with WordPress should add the Do Follow Plugin to their site so that each person who leaves you a comment is getting “link love” from you. The plugin strips that “no follow” attribute from your comments, so each comment you leave generates a backlink for you. There are several different Do Follow plugins for WordPress; I use this one from Semiologic. To make it easier to know which blogs have already added the Do Follow plugin, Colleen at GeekySpeaky created the “D” list. I’d like to thank J.E. at The Fire Pit for adding me to the list! It is open to anyone using the Do Follow, so if you want to participate, follow these instructions: […]
The I Follow movement is spreading like wildfire! You can leave a comment in my blog too, and it will surely follow
How do I know who uses the dofollow plugin?? I added it to my wordpress blogs, though.
[…] found something really cool. it was just few days ago tracy pm me about this plugin. & today coincidentally colleen posted about it. talk about great timing apparently if anyone leaves a comment on a wordpress blog, a ‘no follow’ tag is automatically inserted so that the link is not spidered by the search engine. but with this plugin, what it does is, it strips the ‘no follow’ attributes from your comments & it gives some kind of ’love link’ to those who commented on your site. the best part is, colleen has created a ‘D-List’ whereby you not only can visit the blog on the list, leave some comments & get a link back to your site, you’ll also get to increase the link to your blog by adding your blog in the ‘D-List’. come & join the ‘D-List’. […]
Hi Ann,
Clicking on the Technorati tags at the bottom of my post will help you. I found a lot of people who had tagged post recently, especially under the “do follow” tag.
Count us in!

I Follow!
I’m a little confused by the instructions, but I’m gonna try it anyway. I’m prolly gonna do it wrong but oh well.
[…] Have you heard of this? It’s where you doFollow comments and links from your site/blog and give “Link Love” to other sites. We here at TBW are using the doFollow plugin to give such love to our commenters and people we link. There are also many campaigns promoting this new trend in the blog world, such as Geeky Speaky and Randa Clay Designs. This is also a great way to gain backlinks to help your pagerank. So what are you waiting for? Do you doFollow? […]
I’m not using the plugin because I’m not using wordpress. I don’t use nofollow tags, can I still play? =P
Okay, I am technically challanged so I am terribly confused with all this, but I am trying this out anyway. Thanks for all you do to help and support your fellow bloggers!
[…] Over at Julie’s Journal, she has joined the D List movement. It’s a complete list of all the blogs that use the dofollow plugin. […]

[…] I encourage all of you with your own sites to institute the Do Follow plug in and join the “D-List” for people who are continuing to support their fellow writers. […]
I hope I did it right?

Hmm, if I’m not mistaken I’ve done the equivalent by editing the theme source code directly… and since I will manually delete any spam that gets past the censorship board I really think that is the right thing to do.
Rewarding people who actually contribute to your blog via comments just makes sense!
It’s always good to have another site join the IFollow movement. Hopefully this thing really starts to take off and everyone can start to benefit as a result.
NoFollow was great in concept but poor in execution and results. It’s time it went the way of the DoDo…
I just installed this from the semilogic site and activated it. Went to check options and there are none, is that correct with this plugin?
Thanks!
I’m in too and I’ve tagged you here:

[…] Well it looks as though the Do Follow thing is really catching on. Seems GeekySpeaky.Com has started a “ do follow the “d list”” of sites that use the Do Follow plugin for Wordpress. Yes it is link bait. Yes I am going to participate. Yes you should too. By the way this is a follow up post to the “Do You Follow?” post last week. […]
You have been tagged LifeIsRisky.Com
It’s an interesting idea, similar to the Top Commentators plugin which I just started using on my blog now that it’s using Wordpress. I’m curious - for all of you who are using the Do Follow, are you finding it contributing to overall comments on your blog?
I added the plugin to my http://www.theskinnycook.com, yet how do I get on the D-list?
Thanks Colleen for the idea and thanks for anybody that can clear this one up!
Long live the list!
Skinny Cook - just copy the list and post it on your own site. Move the ones under “My Adds” down to originals and add your own nominations under “my adds”…voila!
[…] I wanted to give you an update on my stats since posting on Thursday about GeekySpeaky.com and the D List she created, I have gained 188 new incoming links to my site. Not too bad for a link popularity campaign that’s in it’s 4th day of running. Now if Technorati would pick up on these links, all will be good at UG.com. Does anyone know how long it takes for this to happen? I use to think it was automagical, but it doesn’t appear to be at this point. […]

[…] April 16, 2007Do Follow! That’s right, I Do Follow! What’s that, you ask? Well, DoFollow is plugin that removes the nofollow tag from your comments. That means that if you DoFollow, then links in your comments are spidered by search engines. Cool, huh? Colleen from GeekySpeaky started the D-List so that we’ll all know who we are and can comment on each other’s blogs to get more traffic. My buddy, Jimi, added me to the list so now I’m going to add a few people, too. […]
Follow is enabled on my blog
I think I finally got a handle on how to do this.
Thanks Colleen, now I know how to get on the list.
How do we keep track of everybody doing their own little list now?
[…] Colleen from GeekySpeaky had this great idea to start a D-List (for do follow) so that we’d all know who uses the DoFollow plugin. My friend Jimi added my brand new blog to the list so now I’m going to add more DoFollow blogs and help this list to grow. […]
I agree with Grokodile - and it’s something I’ve been doing for quite some time in any case.
I install the ‘DO FOLLOW’ plug-in in all my 3 blogs:
http://www.homeofficewomen.com
http://www.dorischua.com
http://www.dorisgoshopping.com
and I remove the ‘no follow’ code in my blogspot too:
http://www.dorischua.blogspot.com
Thanks again Colleen. I’ve also removed the nofollow from my blogspot at http://www.wahseh.blogspot.com/
This was a great idea, and I just wanted to thank you again for starting it.
Hello,
I never even knew this “no-follow” default thing exists in wordpress! That’s a newbie blogger for you.
I dowloaded the do-follow plugin but I don’t know if it works, how will I know? LOL I must sound silly, but this project does sound very very positive and as soon as I know I have the correct plugin working then I am giving out all the linky loves I can!
Kuddos to you and I wrote about it in my blog too, http://maria.kalesanimaria.com/?p=175. Keep it up!
[…] In an effort to increase the traffic and readership to this here little corner of the internet, I have installed a plugin called “Do Follow”. This allows everyone who comments to get a real link from me. Yay! Its a win-win situation. My friend, Cass, was the one that put me on to this and she also put me onto the “D-list” that was started by Colleen over at GeekySpeaky. This is a list that contains more blogs with do follow in their comments. There are more than one plugins for Wordpress that will do this. I also know that you can do it in other platforms, just don’t ask me how! […]
I love the D-List!
Such a great thing to get a little love back from comments. I know this will help everyone in so many ways!
Thanks for the good info:)

Ok, I just implemented the Do Follow plugin and will shortly be posting. I´m not really sure about how to find new people who are using the Do Follow, though. And is there a way to get all of these sites onto just one list instead of scattered all over the internet?
[…] This one is no exception. Colleen of Geeky Speaky has developed the D-List, where bloggers can develop a blog roll. Basically, the concept behind this is people take a lot of effort commenting on other’s people’s blogs. But the sad thing is, the comments section automatically has a “no-follow” tag which prohibits from spiders from crawling. Just think if we can remove that “no-follow” tag with a “do-follow” plug-in, spiders can crawl comments, links to other blogs. This means more visits, hits, pings and hoprefully, a better Page Rank (PR) from Google. […]
I did mine, no one has added me yet so I decided to do it myself, LOL

Always great to see more people using dofollow and getting rid of that anti-social nofollow setup. I love having comments and new readers, and it seems only fitting to reward them with a link. I’ve also found some great blogs that way.
Cheers!

Just wondering about the status of the D-list “movement” or “initiative” or whatever. it seems to have stalled out a little bit (not a lot of publishers creating new D-lists). And why hasn’t anyone established a directory. or would a directory be exactly what “D-listers” dont want. just curious
Zen Zoomie’s place has officially joined the Do-Follow movement.
hi,
Its ok as of now, but dont you think google will have a bad look at it and may bring in a mechanism where comments as links will go void.
wats your say?
I’ve decided to join the ‘movement’!
Thanks.
I’m in, just installed DoFollow.
This is awesome. I think i’m going to join the d-list now
Let me in with my blog on how to wake up early! I’m a follower of I-Follow from day 1.
I have removed the tags from my Blogger blogs, but from what I have read in the Wordpress FAQ, it says that I can’t upload any plugins… Any thoughts?
How I can do dofollow in blogspot? Do you have any links refer to the tutorial? I think would great if I be one of them!
Cool, will be adding myself to the list as well. Cheers!
My answered prayer is this ‘movement’. I’m in…
This was a great idea, joined in a while back.
It took me a while to remove the nofollow from my blogger layout. Blogger kept telling it couln’t save my template, but persistance paid off and now it is gone. I am free. Thank you so much for your wonderful blog and all your informative posts. I have learned so much from you and I will continue to always read you and learn from you. You are my hero. Thanks
Don’t have my company’s blog up yet, but thanks for the info (will definitely implement Do Follow), and thanks for spreading the link love.
